Commissions Deadline Extended to March 10th

By Mushon Zer-Aviv | Press | Community | commissions

Hi there,

we have decided to give you guys (and ourselves) two extra weeks until the commissions program deadline.

The New Deadline: March 10th

We hope this gets the last submitters to conclude their application to their (and hopefully also the jury’s) satisfaction.
Anyway, if you’re ready with your application, do not hesitate to send it.

looking forward to your submissions,

the § team

ShiftSpace License

By Mushon Zer-Aviv | Community | Development | process

Following a long (and fascinating) discussion on the ShiftSpace list, we have come up with a license for the source code of ShiftSpace. This is the short version of it:

ShiftSpace is distributed not only under the GNU GPL license, but also under the GNU LGPL and the MPL licenses. (just like the Mozilla Firefox browser itself)
This means that you are free to use and redistribute ShiftSpace under the conditions imposed by either license, or all, for that matter. You may thus choose to build applications of your own that heavily borrows code from ShiftSpace and license it under GNU GPL, or, if you prefer, use the code under the terms listed in the MPL license.

I am posting the license here for now but will soon hook a link to Trac - an online SVN based project development system we are currently working to install on the server. When we do that, the open sourcerers of you will be able to easily browse our code, and all the rest of us will be able to enjoy a better issue tracking system (better than the current Google Code system)

in the meanwhile,

enjoy the weekend.

Thesis presentation videos

By Mushon Zer-Aviv | Presentations | Press | Community

In the beginning on May both of us (Dan & Mushon) presented our thesis (ShiftSpace) as two (different) presentations in NYU’s ITP thesis week. They went pretty well and they each cover the whole project and focus on different aspects of it. Check it out and let us know what you think!

Ok, now back to work… graduation is just a small symbolic step in the ongoing process of our work, and there are a lot of things going on right now (like the long awaited 0.09). In the meantime, interesting discussions are taking place in our discussion list, you might want to check it out and maybe join in

ShiftSpace 0.08 released

By Dan Phiffer | Community | Releases

The ShiftSpace team is very pleased to announce its latest release, version 0.08. Before getting to the details, we’d like to welcome our two newest developers who contributed to this release, Avital Oliver and David “Dudu” Buchbut. Avital made several important contributions to the code, but also insisted on a more deliberate testing process, which has been very needed.

This release is our biggest both in terms of software development and community building. In addition to bringing Avital and Dudu onboard, we hosted our first developer hackshop two Sundays ago to great success. We hope to include more developers in future iterations of the software. We’re very excited to see this recent growth in the project.

Okay, back to the release. If you already have ShiftSpace installed, just click this link to upgrade. Otherwise click the install button and follow the directions at www.shiftspace.org. More...

Check out our new digs!

By Dan Phiffer | Community

Mushon and I have just launched a new ShiftSpace website, which we’re very happy to share after a couple last minute delays. For those new to ShiftSpace, take a look at our screencasts—they nicely illustrate what we’re doing with the project. The other new feature is our shifts tracker, which allows you to keep tabs on what’s going on in ShiftSpace-land. You can use the tool to find shifts according to username or website, or just to see how other people are using the tool. More...

Jan 11th: ShiftSpace + OpenStudio at Upgrade! Boston

By Mushon Zer-Aviv | Events | Presentations | Community

Hi everyone,

we will be presenting ShiftSpace in an event hosted by Upgrade! Boston in Art Interactive gallery. This will be an opportunity to see what we’ve been up to and to check where we’re going with the project. Another reason to come is MIT’s Open Studio team that will be presenting their interesting project. Kanarinka will be moderating the discussion and we would love to meet some of you there. If you’re interested in ShiftSpace and are anywhere near Boston, come meet us on Thursday. The full details are here.
